Search for this certificate in English and you will find almost nothing useful, which is exactly why this exists. Nearly everything written about it is in Greek, aimed at people who already know the institution by name. If you do not, here is the short version.
What IMXA is
The Ιδρυμα Μελετων Χερσονήσου του Αίμου — the Institute for Balkan Studies, based in Thessaloniki since 1953 — is a Greek research and teaching institution covering the languages and history of south-eastern Europe. Alongside its academic work, it runs language courses and, importantly for this post, certification exams in several Balkan languages, Serbian among them.
Why the certificate carries real weight
Under Law 4610/2019, article 248, proficiency in Serbian (and Albanian, Arabic, Bulgarian, Romanian, Russian and Turkish) for Greek public administration purposes is specifically evidenced by a certificate from IMXA, issued after examination. The certificate is recognised by ΑΣΕΠ, the body that runs recruitment for the Greek public sector. For a Serbian-speaking candidate applying where the language is listed as an asset, this is the document that satisfies the requirement.
Levels follow the Common European Framework: A1 through C2. Exams run twice a year, in February and June.

Who this is actually for
- Serbian native speakers who need formal Greek-state recognition of a language they already speak fluently, for a specific job application.
- Greek learners of Serbian who want a recognised target rather than an open-ended course with no certificate at the end.
- Anyone comparing certification routes and trying to work out whether IMXA, a university-issued certificate, or something else is what their specific requirement is actually asking for — which, in my experience, is the single most common point of confusion.
How preparation for it actually runs
The same method as for any exam I prepare candidates for: an honest diagnostic against the level you need, a written plan working backwards from the sitting, the four skills drilled separately, and timed practice using the real exam format towards the end. The material leans harder on case endings and verbal aspect than most candidates expect, and the written component rewards a formal register that everyday conversation never touches.
